When it comes to foodstuff for humans, there’s a glut of every type of information you can wish to discover.  But naturally, if what humans put inside their body is so important to health, the same must apply to animals.  And this why today we’re talking about timothy hay for small pets, such as rabbits, chinchillas and guinea pigs.

Now, it doesn’t take much effort to realize that timothy hay is advised by pretty much every source as an essential component of your small pet’s diet.  But have you ever wondered why this is?

Well, it’s actually very interesting when you get into the details.  Of course, you don’t want to get bogged down with scientific information that’s not only difficult to understand, but not necessary for the pet owner to know in order to be the best mom or dad possible for their furry friends.

But what is good to know are the following facts:

1.  Timothy hay is recommended as the best type of hay for small pets for the greater proportion of their lives.  This is due to its fiber and protein content.  It’s generally high in fiber and low in protein, meaning that you can literally feed your pets as much timothy hay as they’ll eat, and you’ll have no worries about them putting on excess weight.

However, there is a small caveat to the above.  And this is that a higher protein hay (such as alfalfa) should be fed at various points of a small pet’s life.  This includes babies during the important development stage, pregnant or nursing mothers, geriatric pets who have trouble keeping on weight, and perhaps during periods of rehabilitation from illness or injury.

2.  The fiber content in timothy hay draws water into the digestive system as it travels.  This ensures the smooth passage of waste products, meaning soft, regular stools for your pet that are easy for him or her to pass.

3.   Another beneficial effect of timothy hay is that it encourages your pet to drink enough water.  This in turn keeps his or her urinary tract in good health.

4.  Eating timothy hay encourages your pet to take part in naturally occurring activities, such as foraging.  This is essential for the stimulation and good mental health of your small pet.  You can encourage this by stuffing timothy hay inside paper bags or boxes, meaning they have to go snuffling to find their food.

5.  The fibrous stalks of timothy hay ensure that their ever-growing teeth get a good daily workout.  One of the biggest causes of ill health in rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas is overgrown teeth.  Providing them with the best quality timothy hay can go a good way to avoiding this painful (and expensive) veterinary problem.

So, as you can see, timothy hay really is a small pet superfood.  And one that you should ensure he/she gets on a daily basis.  Ensure that you only feed the very best quality timothy hay you can get your hands on (green in color, smells sweet, no dust, soft to touch), and you’ll be doing your small pet the greatest of service.  And as our little furry friends bring so much joy into our lives, it really is the least you can do!
