Does timothy hay cause allergies?
Imagine giving your pet a fresh flake of green and sweet smelling timothy hay. Everything starts off wonderfully as your pet burrows in and begins munching away, quite happy with its nutrient dense surroundings. And then something happens. The small pets are fine but you start to sneeze. And then your eyes begin to itch and your nose is running all over the place! What was meant to be a beautiful scene of pet and owner bonding has turned into an allergy nightmare.
Unfortunately some pet owners do have an allergic reaction to timothy hay. As timothy grass has a flowered head that releases pollen, the pollen spores are often the source of an allergic reaction. Timothy grass is found throughout the United States so for many people with seasonal allergies timothy grass is sometimes the culprit. If you are prone to seasonal allergies and then bring a batch of timothy hay indoors for your pet, you will probably notice an increase in symptoms.
Talk To A Doctor
The decision to continue using the hay or seek other types of hay can be difficult, especially if your pet truly loves and appreciates timothy hay. Before making any decision be sure and visit with your doctor and/or an allergist to make sure that you are experiencing a timothy hay allergy.
Be sure to speak to a doctor or allergist if you think you are facing a timothy hay allergy. If you do discover that you or a family member has an allergic reaction to timothy hay, then consider trying another type of grass hay.
